Mai was just a child when her mother died. Her mother promised that her father would teach her how to dance. Her father was devastated by the loss of his wife and told Mai her could only teach her martial dances. Mai trains with her father until he is called away to the emperor. He comes back months later with a pregnant bride. Mai's stepmother gives birth to two daughters. Mai stepmothers raises them to be proper noble women with bound feet. Mai is horrified.Now Mai is grown. Her father is called to lead an army to a battle that he feels sure will be a defeat. If he goes to war, he will probably be blamed for the defeat and be executed. If he stays home, the emperor might send an army to kill the whole family for disobeying an order. Mai decides to help protect her families honor.. Her stepmother casts a spell to make Mai look like a man and she leads the army to the battle. At the camp, she proves herself a great fight and she easily beats the best warrior of the kingdom Prince Yi.
Prince Yi is under pressure to marry and produce an heir. This will be his last campaign until he fulfills his duties. Prince Yi is unhappy with the modern noble women with bound feet. He wants a woman warrior who is honest with her emotions and desires. When he meets Mao (Mai) at camp, he is amazed that Mao beats him. The two have daily battles until Prince Yi really respects Mao. He is even thinking about marrying Mao sister since Mao is such a great warrior.
This is a great twist on a couple fairy tales. I loved both Mai and Prince Yi. .

So this one I COMPLETELY ABSOLUTELY LOVED!!! I was thrown off balance the entire time. Mostly because I’m the cat curiosity killed, haha. I looked ahead and know that there several stories that are famous, but not told.
This was a GENIUS mix of Mulan and Cinderella! Advertised as Cinderella completely threw me for a loop the entire book... yes to the very end. With the combination you never really knew which part would happen next or how it would all wrap up! Happy ending, of course, but as a Disney’s Milan FANATIC, this was my cup of tea!
Please please please read, and if you are unlike me, having to read everything IN ORDER (it’s a mental thing) you WOULD be able to read these first two as stand alone novels. ON TO THE NEXT Fly

Dance Cinderella Retold - Wonderful story teller. A wonderful, delightful read. I know this will be a successful fairy tale for the future. I hope the classic fairy tales will still be loved in the future, too. I can’t say enough about Ms. Carlton’s storytelling. Every book I’ve read by her has been tops.
Enchant Beauty and the Beast Retold - Interesting writer. What a fun, interesting spin on an old classic. (I do hope the old classics still remain as favorites, while the new versions join the ranks of beloved tales.) I really enjoy reading Ms. Carlton’s writing, she is great.
Awaken Sleeping Beauty Retold - Wonderful Story Teller. Another delightful fairy tale. Well written and edited. I’m looking forward to read all of Ms. Carlton’s writings, since the few works I’ve read so far have not disappointed me once.
Revel Twelve Dancing Princesses Retold - A magical, breathtaking story. A well written, exciting story with filled several wonderful, and several disgusting, characters. I couldn't put the book down, it read like a thriller. Another great read from this author. No vulgar/mild cursing.
Silence Little Mermaid Retold - Another wonderful fairy tale. Must read Revel first, which tells more of the twelve brothers that are mentioned here, and the secret of the island. But, if you can't don't fret, this story is still great on its own. I've read all of the fairy tales by this author and each time she has done a wonderful job. Her versions will be just as popular as the old classics most of us grew up reading.
Embellish Brave Little Tailor Retold - This one is just as good as the others. Filled with fun, adventure and adversity. A well written, fast paced, humorous fairy tale with twists. The characters are fun and the plot just carries you along until the story ends. Some of the characters have appeared in her other fairytales. Ms. Carlton has yet to disappoint me with her work. A natural storyteller. I look forward to every book she writes.

First off I'm not going to give you any spoilers for the book except what this book reminds me of Cinderella and Mulan mixed together with a little bit of something else. I did enjoy it it was epic it I enjoyed it I liked how he went to the battle scenes I like the way how the two characters were developed so well you got really into the book. I think you would enjoy this too because it has a new spin on an old story or told but I think it's a it's a nice nice book I read the two before it and enjoy them too and I'm looking for the next one so yes I did enjoy it
I read the first 5 books in this series a while back, when they were available on KU. However, recently I was able to snag this one on sale and just finished reading it again. I had forgotten just how much I love Demelza Carlton's writing. Her take on classic fairy tales really can't be matched. Unlike many other writers who are simply looking to titillate, she weaves an engaging story with rich detail and well-thought out plot lines. I think the Cinderella tale fit *perfectly* with the Mulan-like premise of this novel. The writing is fantastic and engaging, and the romance slow to build and sweet. No gratuitous sex scenes here; instead, the author focuses on building a believable world with many historically accurate details.
Truly, this book is one of the best re-imagined fairy tales I have read in a long, long time. I look forward to reacquainting myself with her other novels.
